Having lived in Brussels for 33 years, I had heard about the United Fund but had never been active within it. I decided two years ago to extend my volunteer work more into the Belgian community since I speak French and the needs are also great here in Belgium.

The Allocations Committee members are sent basic information about organizations/institutions seeking funds from the UFB. It is interesting and enlightening to visit an organization, see how it functions, discuss their needs, meet individuals who are involved, and pose specific questions. There is no subjective decision on my part at that time.

When the Committee meets monthly, members present files and there is a flurry of questions. I find the members are honest, clear, careful, organized, and objective. We receive all kinds of requests and from all over the country. So many of the organizations are never seen outside of their little world.

The United Fund raises their visibility and we try to help them continue the work that most of us have chosen not to do.
